The Shozi Crater and caves are found along Kabale –Kisoro route, 5km in Kigezi sub-region Southwestern Uganda about 410km. Along the Kabale-Kisoro route, take left towards Mutolore trading centre and within a few meters, you can be at the site.

Shozi Crater and Caves is at an elevation of 2000m featuring 400m long cave that was created by petrified lava flow. The caves encompass 1000s of bats and a visit here rewards you with spectacular views of the numerous small lakes. These lakes feature steep shores compared to any lake, and they are close to each other.

The caves are found 18km, about an hour’ drive away from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Shozi caves are believed to have been created by King Luganzi of Rwanda and he was popular for his supernatural powers. These caves were the king’s escape route to Rwanda, especially during war times.

Where to Find the Caves

The Shozi Crater and Caves are located near the trading centre of Mutolere off the road to Mutanda about tkm northeast of Kisoro Town.
